OUR STORY
The Derrick Anthony King Mission Foundation was established in 2026 in loving memory of Derrick Anthony King, a devoted father, family man, and community member whose life was defined by compassion, perseverance, and a commitment to helping others.
On July 3, 2026, Derrick tragically lost his life in a car accident alongside his daughter, Layla King, who survived. In the wake of this life-changing tragedy, Layla and her mother, Angel King, turned their grief into a commitment to honor Derrick's life and ensure that his legacy would continue not only through memories, but through meaningful action that would positively impact the lives of others.
Together, Angel and Layla founded The Derrick Anthony King Mission Foundation, transforming their personal loss into a mission rooted in the very values Derrick lived by. For Layla, who experienced the accident firsthand, helping establish the Foundation became a deeply personal way to carry forward her father's love, generosity, and dedication to uplifting others.
A Legacy of Service
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Derrick understood the importance of community, opportunity, and lending a helping hand. Throughout his 28-year career with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), he was known for sharing his knowledge and helping others pursue opportunities, including guiding individuals interested in careers with the MTA.
His commitment to giving extended beyond his professional life. Alongside his family, Derrick participated in community initiatives that provided essential resources, including coats, backpacks, and school supplies, to families in need.
One of Derrick's aspirations was to establish a scholarship honoring his grandmother, Georgia Clarke, a longtime resident of Brooklyn's Farragut Houses. Today, that vision lives on through the Georgia Clarke Scholarship, which supports students connected to the communities that helped shape his life.
Our work reflects the values that continue to guide Derrick's legacy: Respect, Family & Community, Service, Compassion, and Perseverance.
Through initiatives such as the Georgia Clarke Scholarship, the H.O.L.A. Scholarship supporting HBCU students, and educational programs designed to help students pursue their goals, we strive to remove barriers, encourage personal growth, and create lasting opportunities for individuals and families.
Although the Foundation was born from loss, its purpose is rooted in hope. Every scholarship awarded, resource shared, and life touched is another opportunity to carry Derrick's spirit of generosity forward.
His legacy is our mission. His impact continues through us.
